Theme: Formative History, Challenges and New Directions

Symposium Co-Chairs: Alexandra Lazar (Executive Director at Assyrian Studies Association & Ph.D. student at University of California, Davis); Professor Sargon Donabed (Board Member at Assyrian Studies Association & Roger Williams University); Professor Hannibal Travis (Advisor Board at Assyrian Studies Association & Professor of Law at Florida International University); Dr. Daniel Tower, Ph.D. (University of Sydney), and Cynthia Yonan.

The Assyrian Studies Association, in partnership with Stanford University's Humanities Center, is organizing a Symposium entitled, Formative History, Challenges, and New Directions. The purpose of this event is to delve into the rich history of the Assyrian people and examine current challenges they face, while also identifying new avenues for future research and scholarship. The Symposium is expected to be an exciting and informative gathering that will feature presentations and discussions from distinguished scholars, experts, and community leaders. Attendees can anticipate encountering a diverse range of topics in the field of Assyrian Studies, such as language, literature, history, archaeology, politics, and more.

Despite facing significant challenges, the field of Assyrian Studies has recently experienced unexpected opportunities, with a growing body of published scientific and sociological research and courses offered at universities. These trends indicate the emergence of a diverse demographic of scholars interested in studying Assyrian culture and heritage. To promote the academic study of Assyrian culture and heritage in a positive manner, the Assyrian Studies Association encourages scholars to think creatively about how they can engage in the field of Assyrian Studies to pursue their research in Assyrian cultural preservation, continuity, and inclusivity while also pushing boundaries.

Overall, the Symposium is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who is interested in Assyrian Studies to learn about the latest research and developments in the field, connect with others who share their interests, and gain valuable insights into the history, challenges, and new directions in the study of Assyrian culture and heritage.
